Matt Varner suspended

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball today announced that that Single-A Lake Elsinore right-handed pitcher Matt Varner, has been suspended (50 games) for violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Varner was one of five minor league players suspended today.

Matt Varner, 24, appeared in four games for the Storm this season, going 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP).

The Houston, Texas native led Midwest League relievers in saves (34), games finished (47) and relief points (100) last season and was named to the Midwest League mid-season All-Star team. Originally selected by San Diego in the 11th round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Varner has appeared in 87 minor league games, going 7-10 with a 3.66 ERA (39 ER/96.0 IP).

Neil Jamison was promoted from the Fort Wayne Wizards to take his place.
