Bees beat Beavers with extra inning blast

Despite solid offense throughout the night, the Beavers were unable to answer in the tenth after Salt Lake's Dallas McPhereson broke the deadlock with a solo shot to right field.

Nevertheless, the game provided several notable highlights. Freddy Guzman, who notched his first multi-steal game the night before, followed up with an encore tonight stealing third twice. He made several successful attempts at second that didn't count as steals only because they coincided with walks.

From the opening pitch when he bunted and then beat out the throw by diving into first, he was all hustle. Throughout the game he displayed his characteristic speed, terrorizing the pitchers each of the three times he made it on base.

"If I can get on, I can steal. It's what I like to do and what I have to do," Guzman acknowledged.

Guzman tallied ten multi-steal games in 2003 with back to backs on June 2-3, July 7-5 and August 13-14. Guzman tallied eight multi-steal games in 2004.

Luke Carlin who racked up his first Triple-A homer the previous night continued to perform well with a two RBI, stand-up triple for his first at bat followed by a single in the fifth, reaching base again on an error in the seventh. The switch hitter is fitting in well after getting called up from Double-A Mobile when catcher Ben Risinger was placed on the DL and subsequently joined the Padres as a bullpen catcher.

"There are a lot of veteran players to learn from here," Carlin said. "I've made some recent adjustments to feel more comfortable at the plate. I'm using my lower half more now to stay behind when I hit." All of Carlin's professional homers have come when hitting left.

Recent addition Manny Alexander homered to lead off the fifth inning and Paul McAnulty continued to hit extremely well pushing his current streak to eight games with a second-inning stand-up-double and a game-tying home run over the 405 mark in center field in the eighth. He has reached base safely in 16 of his 17 games this year. In 2005 he had a 16 game hitting streak from June 3-21 and had twenty multi-hit games while with the Mobile Double-A team and 15 with the Beavers between July 22 and August 31. He posted a twelve game hitting streak in 2004 from June 3-4.
