Beavers outlast Grizzlies 11-6

Veteran right-hander Mike Thompson is a survivor. After a rocky first inning in which the first four Grizzlies up reached base, hitting the ball hard for base hits, and scoring three runs before an out was recorded, his survival instincts surfaced.

He settled down nicely giving up only two hits and two walks, while striking four in the five innings of his fifth start to up his record to 3-0 with a 4.82 ERA. He has two no-decisions Overall the league is batting .252 against Thompson. In 28 innings pitched, he has given up 26 hits and struck out 21. .

"I was missing high and missing low," said Thompson. I got back on track with Carlin and stuck to the game plan. My change up was working and my fastball was just OK. We were able to put up a few runs and that helped." .

In his only other rocky start he gave up five-first innings runs to Colorado on April 12 at home in PGE Park, but settled down to retire 13 of the final 16 batters he faced in a no-decision. .

Left Fielder Jack Cust continued to find his way on base at a blistering pace. He has reached base safely in 18 of 19 at bats, with 10 walks, six hits and 2 hit by pitches. Over the past four games his batting average has rose 80 points from a minuscule .208 to a respectable .288 after last nights game. Home cooking obviously agrees with Cust as he is hitting .314 (11-35) with 12 of his 13 RBI's and 16 of his 21 walks, three home runs and 13 of 21 runs scored coming in front of the home crowd. .

Brian Sikorski recorded his fourth save with 1 1/3 innings of one hit ball after Ryan Meaux and Jason Anderson struggled in relief. Meaux gave up three earned runs and three hits, one walk with one strikeout in the 1.0 innings. Anderson loaded the bases on three walks in the eighth that prompted manger Craig Colbert to bring in Sikorski to close out the game. Sikorski has 24 strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings of work. .

The Beavers scored all 11 of their runs in the first three innings, evening their record at 11 – 11.
