Padres Acquire Bard and Meredith

The San Diego Padres acquired catcher Josh Bard, right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith and a player to be named later or cash considerations from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for catcher Doug Mirabelli. Bard will join the club in San Francisco, while Meredith will be optioned to Triple-A Portland.

"The addition of Bard and Meredith gives us two young players who will be solid additions to our system and Major League club," said Towers. "Bard is a switch-hitting catcher who has several Major League starts (139), while Meredith is a pitcher with experience as a closer, has consistently been tough on right-handed hitters and moved quickly through the Boston system."

Josh Bard appeared in seven games for the Red Sox this season, hitting safely in four of those seven games, batting .278 (5-for-18) with a double. Acquired from Cleveland along with Coco Crisp in a five-player deal January 27, 2006, the 28-year-old Bard has appeared in 163 Major League games over parts of five seasons with Cleveland (2002-05) and Boston (2006), batting .240 (123-for-513) with 25 doubles, 13 home runs and 61 RBI. Selected originally in the third round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft by Colorado, Bard has thrown out 31 of 94 (33 percent) runners attempting to steal.

Cla Meredith appeared in eight games with the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox this season, going 0-0 with a 5.27 ERA (8 ER/13.2 IP), with five walks and 14 strikeouts. The 22-year-old Meredith, who made his Major League debut with Boston in 2005, was selected by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2004 draft and was the second product of that draft to reach the Majors after Oakland right-hander Huston Street. In 90 career minor league games (2004-06), the right-hander is 4-7 with 37 saves and a 3.45 ERA (42 ER/109.2 IP).

Doug Mirabelli, 35, was acquired by the Padres from the Red Sox in exchange for second baseman Mark Loretta December 7, 2005. Mirabelli appeared in 14 games with San Diego this season, batting .182 (4-for-22) with a double. Drafted originally by San Francisco in the fifth round of the 1992 First-Year Player Draft, Mirabelli is a career .240 hitter (283-for-1181) with 69 doubles, 47 home runs and 165 RBI over parts of 11 Major League seasons with San Francisco (1996-2000), Texas (2001), Boston (2001-05) and San Diego (2006).
