Padres tab third baseman Matt Antonelli

With the 17th overall pick in the First Year Player Draft, the San Diego Padres selected Wake Forest third baseman Matt Antonelli, adding depth to one of their weakest system positions with a highly athletic, high-aptitude pick.

Matt Antonelli, a native of Massachusetts, hit .333 for the Demon Deacons this season, knocking 11 home runs and 18 doubles in 219 at-bats.

Highly regarded for his overall athletic ability as well as his makeup, Antonelli was an all-star in the Cape Cod League each of the last two summers.

The 21-year-old was originally selected by the Dodgers in 2003, but opted to go to college. A true athlete, Antonelli was the Massachusetts Player of the Year in both football and hockey, and was a runner-up for baseball in his senior year at St. John's Prep.

Antonelli increased his power production in his senior year to move up in the draft.
