Offense powers Beavers, Storm on Father's Day

Only two of the four teams were in action on Father's Day and the hitters were out to make their dad's proud. Jon Knott and Luke Carlin powered the Portland offense while Chase Headley, Peter Ciofrone, and Nic Crosta pummeled the opposition for the Storm.

Portland won 13-3 over Fresno (Giants)

Jon Knott has been on base in six straight games and raised his average to .250 on the year, the highest it has been since April 10 – four games into the season. He went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI's, three coming with two outs. During his streak he is 7-for-16 with six walks. It was the fifth time this year he has knocked in four or more in a game.

Luke Carlin added three two-out RBI's, going 1-for-4 with a walk. He capped off the third inning with a bases loaded double. He had three RBI's over his last 24 games coming in. The catcher is hitting .261 over his last eight games after hitting .205 in the 15 contests prior to that. Carlin and Jack Cust are the only two players on the team who have drawn more walks than strikeouts, 27-to-24 for Carlin. He also threw out the only runner attempting to steal on him

After giving up four runs or more in six straight starts, Jack Cassel limited the opposition to two runs on six hits and a walk over seven innings to pick up win number three on the year. He did give up a homer, the sixth off him in his last five starts. It was the second time in nine starts he has given up two runs or less as the opposition is hitting .295 off him as a starter and .306 for the year with runners in scoring position.

The middle of the order, consisting of Chase Headley, Peter Ciofrone and Nic Crosta, went 8-for-13 with four walks, eight RBI's and four runs scored. While the Storm scored 11 runs, they had just one extra base hit. Chase Headley has scored six runs over his last four with three RBI's. Ciofrone has knocked in nine over his last five games. Crosta has seven RBI's over his last three contests.

Chris Jaile made his second straight start and fourth of the year, going five-plus innings and allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks. He gave up a two run homer in the sixth before getting the hook. Jaile had given up two homers in his previous 20 appearances over a span of 39.1 innings. After holding the opposition to a .260 average over the first two months of the year, they are batting .319 off him in June.

After Jaile exited the game, two of the next three batters homered off Mark Roberts – making his California League debut. The last time he surrendered two jacks in a game came on July 28, 2004 while playing for Spokane of the Northwest League. The right-hander had given up one homer in 15 appearances with the Wizards before being promoted and four runs total. He came into the league with just five hits allowed in his previous 35 at bats.
