Matt Bush to start season in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne, IN – Shortstop Matt Bush, the number one overall selection in the 2004 June Amateur Draft, will open his 2006 season with the Fort Wayne Wizards, San Diego Padres officials announced today.

Matt Bush, who has been recovering from a leg injury suffered near the end of spring training this year, is coming from the Padres extended spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona.

Jodam Rivera, who appeared in three games with the Wizards and hit .100 (1-for-10), will return to Peoria.

Bush was named the best defensive infielder and was rated with the best infield arm in the Padres minor league system by Baseball America's 2006 Best Tools survey. He spent the entire 2005 season with Fort Wayne, hitting .221 with 13 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 32 runs batted in.

Bush, who led the Midwest League with 83 double plays turned, was named to the Eastern Division's Midwest League All-Star team last year.

The Wizards begin the second half of the 2006 season at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday when they host the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim affiliate) in the opener of a seven-game homestand.
