Javis Diaz a catalyst; Chase Headly hits ten

The Southern League All-Stars were in action. Manny Ayala was nasty over 5.2 innings for Lake Elsinore. Javis Diaz is proving to be a gem at the top of the order. A.J. Davidiuk pounded out four hits in a win. An update on the Padres Dominican Summer League camp and players standing out, including a seven game hitting streak from one outfielder.

Portland had the night off

Justin Leone homered once in the Triple-A Home Run Derby and failed to make it out of the first round.

Mobile had the night off for the Southern League All-Star game

George Kottaras plated the first run of the game for the Southern Division with a single up the middle. He struck out in his other at bat. He also had a throwing error.

Drew Macias went 1-for-4 with a strikeout and two fly outs to left before doubling in the ninth inning.

Sean Thompson gave up a single, a double, tossed a wild pitch which scored a run followed by a walk. He then struck out the next batter and induced an inning-ending double play to get out of the frame with one run allowed.

Luis Cruz came on as a defensive replacement in the fourth and singled in his first at bat before grounding out in the eighth and lining out in the ninth.

Lake Elsinore won 7-1 over Lancaster (Diamondbacks)

Manny Ayala was brilliant over 5.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits while striking out seven to pick up the win, his first as a professional. He has given up two runs on five hits over 9.2 innings as a starter while striking out 14. The right-hander hasn't walked a batter in his last 12 innings and has issued a free pass to four in 31 innings on the year. Left-handed hitters came into the game with a .156 average against.

Yordany Ramirez pounded out three hits in four at bats, including two doubles. He scored two runs and drove in two. It is his second three-hit night in three games and the first time this year he has collected multiple extra base hits in the same game. Ramirez also has four RBI's in his last three games – collecting both of his two-RBI games on the year over that span.

Chase Headley followed up a three-hit night last night with another three-hit night on Monday to push his hitting streak to ten games. The third baseman collected three hits in five at bats with two doubles and two RBI's. His 25 doubles are now amongst the top five in the California League. Eight of the doubles have come over the current hitting streak and he has 17 hits over his last 37 at bats.

Matt Stocco went 1-for-4 with a double and twp RBI's in his third game for the Storm – his second as the starter behind the plate. It was his second double in the California League and he is 6-for-16 on the year with six RBI's over two leagues.

Fort Wayne lost 7-5 to Kane County (A's)

Kyle Blanks hammered a ball onto Coliseum Boulevard some 430-feet from home plate in the bottom of the fourth. It was his only hit of the game but tied Daryl Jones for the team lead in homers with ten. After hitting .328 during the month of May, Blanks has gone 29-for-136, a .213 average. His season average has dipped from .326 to .271 as a result. The first baseman has struck out 14 times in his last nine games with eight coming over his last four and he is in a 5-for-31 slump over his last seven games.

Javis Diaz went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. The outfielder has three straight multi-hit games with six runs scored over his last four. He has been on base in 19-of-22 games with the Wizards and is hitting .432 when he leads off an inning, going 16-for-37. Diaz also threw a runner out at third base after hitting Jodam Rivera who relayed the throw to David Freese, his fourth outfield assist of the year. He owns a perfect fielding percentage, playing mostly in centerfield.

Alfredo Fernandez struck out two in his scoreless inning of work. It was his tenth perfect outing of the year, where he did not allow a hit or a walk. Since allowing runs in three straight appearances, Fernandez has gone four without allowing a run. He has given up runs in 13 of his 33 appearances on the year. He has limited right-handers to 20 hits in 108 at bats and opponents have 19 hits in 87 at bats off him with the bases empty.

Eugene lost 6-5 to Everett (Mariners)

Wade LeBlanc struck out the side in the fifth with a walk sandwiched in between and three of the next four batters en route to three shutout innings. The left-hander had struck out four over his first six innings. The second round pick allowed one hit to lower his ERA from 9.00 to 6.00. He had given up six runs in his previous five innings.

Jon Kirby dropped his second straight appearance, giving up a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. The right-hander has given up five runs over his last two-thirds of an inning after giving up four runs last time out without recording an out. It is the third time in four appearances for the Emeralds that he has yielded a run and fourth time in his last five over two leagues he has surrendered a run.

Matt Antonelli went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI's, matching his RBI total over the previous 12 games. The third baseman came into the game with eight hits in 43 at bats when he played his position but was hitting .455 when he was the designated hitter. Antonelli has walked 19 times in 21 games but has struck out just nine times.

AZL Padres won 8-2 over AZL Brewers

While Felix Carrasco pushed his hitting streak to 12 games, A.J. Davidiuk powered the offense with a 4-for-4 night that included his first two doubles of the year, three RBI's and two runs scored. The infielder came into the game with four hits in his last 25 at bats. It is his second three-RBI game in his last four contests. A right-handed batter, Davidiuk is hitting .320 off right-handed pitching. He is also hitting .364 with runners in scoring position.

John Hussey tossed two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out two. The right-hander has allowed three hits over his last six scoreless frames and has given up two earned runs in 12 innings this season. While the opposition is hitting .346 off him with the bases empty on 9-for-26 hitting, they have three hits in 17 at bats with runners on and just one hit in ten at bats with runners in scoring position. Just one of the 12 hits he has allowed has gone for extra bases.

Kyler Burke didn't have a base hit in three at bats but drew two walks and scored twice, giving him six runs scored in his last three games and he has been on base nine times over the last three. Five of his nine walks have come during that span. The outfielder has been on base in 12 of his first 14 games with 14 of his 16 hits coming with the bases empty to give him a .467 average. He is, however, hitting .083 with runners in scoring position, going 2-for-24.

DSL Padres Update

Yoeli Florentino, a 20-year old outfielder, had a seven game hitting streak through games of July 7. He was 12-for-27 with seven RBI's over that time, including RBI's in his last four games. He is batting .407 with runners in scoring position and has accounted for ten extra base hits while no other player on the team has more than three. He is one of two players on the team to play in all 24 games.

Jose Martinez, a 19-year old right-hander, has struck out 32 in 22.2 innings and has whiffed 18 over his last 12.2 frames. While he has uncorked six wild pitches, he is limiting the opposition to a .198 average against. He has given up three runs over his last 12.2 innings and has tossed three scoreless outings in six appearances. On the season he is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA.
