Padres load up in Fort Wayne

The San Diego Padres are setting up their final postseason rosters for their affiliates. While no player can be sent down from the league above them without special league approval, they can move players up from the level below. Those moves have begun.

First baseman Craig Cooper, outfielder Chad Huffman, third baseman Matt Antonelli and shortstop Jesus Lopez will all be going to the Fort Wayne Wizards of the Midwest League from the Eugene Emeralds for the playoff push.

Huffman is second in the Northwest League in hitting with a .338 average while Cooper sits third with a .322 mark. Cooper is third in RBI's with 46 while Huffman is fifth with 39. Cooper also ranks in the top five in hits, doubles, runs scored, and on base percentage while Huffman ranks in the top five in extra base hits, slugging percentage, and on base percentage.

Antonelli is hitting .286 with a .426 on base percentage and has walked 46 times while striking out 31. Lopez has a .246 average but is expected to shore up the left side of the infield with his range and arm.

Infielder Abraham Aguilar, meanwhile, will head back to Eugene and outfielder Drew Davidson was released by the club.

Also, the AZL Padres will send a few players to Eugene after the conclusion of their season, which will be on Wednesday if they win the second half outright, meaning no Championship game will be played since they also won the first half, or after the Championship game on Thursday. Thus, Eugene will play with a few short over the next several days.

Early indications are first baseman Jeremy Hunt will join outfielders Cedric Hunter and Sam Carter in Eugene.

A pitcher from Peoria is also expected to move up but that determination won't be made until Wednesday or Thursday. Pablo Menchaca, slated to pitch the Championship game, if it comes to that, may come up if they end the season by winning the second half, or John Hussey, Wednesday's starter, could also move up if the season is extended by a day.
