Padres extend PDC with Portland

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres today extended their Player Development Contract with Triple-A Portland of the Pacific Coast League for two years through the 2008 season.

"We are very pleased about extending our Player Development Contract with Portland," Fuson said. "The 2007-08 seasons will be our seventh and eighth years with Portland and the organization has become part of the Padres family. The ownership group in Portland, along with the staff in San Diego, has stepped up to make this a successful and fruitful affiliation for all parties involved."

The Beavers have been the Padres Triple-A affiliate since 2001, compiling a 432-423 (.505) record over the last six seasons.

"We have enjoyed a tremendous partnership with the Padres," said Beavers President and General Manager John Cunningham. "With a steady stream of top prospects coming through Portland each season, the Padres consistently have provided competitive teams for us over the last six years. But more importantly, the Padres commitment to our extensive Community Outreach Program has created a strong and meaningful bond between the organization and the community."

Current Padres who have played for the Beavers include right-handed pitchers Jon Adkins (2006), Clay Hensley (2005), Cla Meredith (2006), Brian Sweeney (2004-06) and Mike Thompson (2005-06); and infielders Manny Alexander (2005-06), Josh Barfield (2005) and Khalil Greene (2003).

"We greatly value our relationship with Portland as the final stepping stone for our players before they enter into the Majors," Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers said. "Several of our players on the Major League roster have reaped the benefits of the great facility and staff in Portland, and we look forward to continuing our association for the next two years."
