Cust among those called up to Padres

Ben Johnson and Jack Cust, RHP Mike Thompson and 1B Paul McAnulty will join the Padres on Tuesday following Monday's end of the Pacific Coast League season.

It took all season for it to happen but Jack Cust was rewarded for his patience, literally. Cust, who leads all of baseball in walks with 143 in 138 games with Triple-A Portland was among those called up by the Padres after the completion of the Beavers season. Cust hit .293 with 23 doubles, 30 homers and 77 RBI's. He also led the Pacific Coast League in runs scored with 97 and on base percentage at .467. His .549 slugging percentage ranked fifth in the league.

Ben Johnson hit .263 with 11 doubles, one triple, seven homers and 22 RBI's over 51 games with Portland. He also scored 35 runs and drew 23 walks. Johnson worked from the leadoff spot during his latest stint in Triple-A.

Mike Thompson is being promoted from Triple-A Portland for the sixth time this season. The right-hander is 6-1 in Portland with a 3.76 ERA. He pitched three scoreless innings on Monday and has yielded 69 hits and 20 walks in 69.1 innings.

Paul McAnulty hit .310 over 125 games in Triple-A with 34 doubles, five triples, 19 homers and 79 RBI's. He also scored 76 runs while drawing 62 walks playing first base, third base and left and right field.
