Manager trickle effect

The Eugene Emeralds have a new skipper for the second year in a row – to accomplish that the Padres looked into their past.

Just days after the San Diego Padres lost Bruce Bochy to the San Francisco Giants, the minor league side of operations brought back a former manager of the big league club - Greg Riddoch.

Riddoch managed the Padres from 1990-92, tallying a 200-194 record before being replaced by Jim Riggleman. He also worked with Grady Fuson, the Padres' vice president of scouting and player development, during his tenure in Texas, winning a 2005 Northwest League (NWL) Championship with the Spokane Indians.

His history with Eugene extends back to 1975. He managed the club from 1975-76 and 1978-81. In 1975, Riddoch made his debut with the Emeralds, guiding them to a 54-25 record and a Northwest League Championship.

After leaving Eugene after the 1976 season, Riddoch returned to the NWL in 1978 and led the Emeralds to the Southern Division Championship. In 1980, Riddoch led the Emeralds to another NWL Championship. Coincidentally, the Emeralds have not won a league championship since Riddoch left the Emeralds in 1981. In six years with the Emeralds, Riddoch compiled a 227-204 record and ranks #2 all-time in wins in Emeralds franchise history.

With Riddoch coming aboard, it creates a trickle effect throughout the system. Doug Dascenzo is expected to move up to the Fort Wayne Wizards and take over as manager of the Midwest League franchise, establishing some consistency with the players he had last season.

Randy Ready is expected to jump to Double-A San Antonio to fill the vacant spot left open with Gary Jones becaming the roving infield instructor.

Every manager would be accounted for with Rick Renteria staying in Lake Elsinore, Craig Colbert in Portland and Carlos Lezcano in Peoria.

Also, Matt Howe has reportedly been let go after working one year with the franchise.

"I am not ready to announce the rest right now," Grady Fuson, the Padres vice president of scouting and player development, said.

Fuson will put the official announcements for the rest of the coaching assignments forth next Thursday.
