Padres sign Juan Senreiso

The San Diego Padres signed Juan Senreiso earlier this month with the expectation that he will fight for a job on the Double-A squad. The Texas Rangers released the 25-year old outfielder after the 2006 season.

Juan Senreiso, known as a free-swinger, had a breakout campaign in terms of power last year. He clubbed 15 homers along with 16 doubles and six triples after not hitting more than 11 dingers in his previous six seasons.

A Dominican native, the outfielder struck out 122 times in 110 games last year and has whiffed 611 times in 658 career minor league games, drawing just 187 walks over that time.

An experienced centerfielder who has also spent time in left and right field, Senreiso has stolen as many as 45 bases in a season (2003) and has swiped 16 or more in every season of his career.

He is a career .268 hitter but has batted .284 or better in each of his last three seasons, hitting .287 in 106 games last season for High-A High Desert.

He has a solid outfield arm, notching 47 outfield assists over his last three seasons, but he is also prone to making lazy errors.

"Pretty good hitter, definitely would be categorized as a free swinger," a Texas Rangers scout said. "Strong arm in the field, but he played like a cocky SOB. I remember him misplaying a fly ball in right field because he tried to one hand it."
