Five points with Brandon Powell

Originally selected in the eighth round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals, Brandon Powell joined the San Diego Padres after being taken in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft.

Powell hit .280 last year for High-A Potomac of the Carolina League, collecting 34 doubles, four triples, 14 homers, and 71 RBIs. He also stole 30 bags in 39 chances and can play a number of positions on the diamond.

You were a Rule 5 draft pick – what were your thoughts on being selected by the Padres?

Brandon Powell: It's an honor. Any time you get picked up in the Rule 5, it's a big honor to come over here. Coming from a program like Washington, hopefully I represent them well. Along with Kansas City, coming from them too. Hopefully I'll fit into this program real well and represent those other two programs as well.

Do you view this as a new start?

Brandon Powell: Oh yeah, definitely. Definitely a new start. New program, new start. The guys are learning me just like I'm learning them. I've got to take my tools and move on along.

What are the strengths of your game?

Brandon Powell: I'm versatile. I can play pretty much any position in the field. My bat's always tugging me along and along. Hopefully I can still bring that to the plate and still contribute on offense.

You have some pop with 52 extra base hits last year – what kind of hitter do you view yourself as?

Brandon Powell: (Laughter) I'm not a home-run hitter or anything like that. I'm more of a doubles type of guy. Occasionally I get one out of the park but mostly a doubles/triples type guy.

Is there pressure to perform early to turn some heads?

Brandon Powell: No, not really. I'm just trying to get ready for April. Wherever they put me, they put me. It's out of my control. That stuff you can't handle. You have nothing to do with it. Whenever the time comes, wherever I go, at this point it may be low A, who knows. I just try to go out and do what I'm supposed to do, do my job, and hopefully one day somebody will give me a chance.
