Padres to release Todd Walker

Peoria, AZ-- The San Diego Padres will request unconditional release waivers on Tuesday on infielder Todd Walker.

Todd Walker, 33, is hitting .225 (9-for-40) with three doubles and an RBI in 14 games for the Padres this Spring. He batted a combined .278 (123-for-442) with 22 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 53 RBI and 56 runs scored with the Chicago Cubs and Padres in 2006. Walker was acquired by San Diego on July 31, 2006 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jose Ceda and appeared in 44 games for the Padres, batting .282 (35-for-124) with six doubles, a triple, three home runs, 13 RBI and 18 runs scored.

Originally signed by the Minnesota Twins as a first-round selection in the 1994 First-Year Player Draft, Walker has played parts of 11 Major League seasons with the Twins (1996-2000), Colorado Rockies (2000-01), Cincinnati Reds (2001-02), Boston Red Sox (2003), Cubs (2004-06) and Padres (2006). He has a career average of .289 (1303-for-4506) with 283 doubles, 107 home runs, 541 RBI and 642 runs scored in 1,270 games.

The Padres 40-man roster will stand at 38 and the club will have 35 players in Big League camp, including 31 players from the 40-man roster and four non-roster invitees.
