Padres purchase contract of Pete Laforest

The San Diego Padres purchased the contract of catcher Pete Laforest on Thursday, effectively placing him on the 40-man roster, and bringing him up to backup Rob Bowen. Josh Bard was placed on the disabled list with a strained groin.

Pete Laforest had a solid Spring Training with the Padres where he went 14-for-37 with four doubles, three homers and ten RBIs.

The catcher missed the entire 2006 season – initially with a shoulder injury and then a back injury that claimed the rest of the season.

He continued his hot hitting from spring, launching a solo homer in his first at bat and going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in his first game in Triple-A Portland. He was, however, hitless in his last 16 at bats before being called up.

Bard was 8-for-28 with four RBIs through seven games with the Padres prior to the injury.
