Padres purchase contract of Aaron Rakers

San Diego, CA-- The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Aaron Rakers from Triple-A Portland and optioned infielder/outfielder Paul McAnulty to that same Portland club.

Aaron Rakers, 30, is 0-0 with a 1.00 ERA (1 ER/9.0 IP) in five appearances for Triple-A Portland this season. He has recorded seven strikeouts compared to one walk while holding opposing hitters to a .167 average (5-for-30).

In 13 Major League games over parts of two seasons with the Baltimore Orioles (2004-05), Rakers went 1-0 with a 3.50 ERA (7 ER/18.0 IP), 14 strikeouts and four walks. Originally selected by Baltimore in the 23rd round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, he has a career minor league record of 34-23 with 65 saves and a 2.51 ERA (123 ER/440.2 IP) in 326 games (one start) with the Orioles (1999-2005) and Padres (2007) organizations.

Paul McAnulty, 26, is batting .125 (1-for-8) with a double and a run scored in eight games for the Padres this season. He has made six appearances as a pinch-hitter and has played in two games in left field.

Originally selected by San Diego in the 12th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, McAnulty is hitting .200 (9-for-45) with two doubles, a home run, three RBI and eight runs scored in 46 Major League games with the Padres (2005-07). In 575 career minor league games, McAnulty has hit .305 (644-for-2112) with 158 doubles, 73 home runs, 359 RBI and 344 runs scored.

The Padres 40-man roster is now at 38.
