Padres recall Hampson, option Thompson

San Diego, CA-- The San Diego Padres today recalled left-handed pitcher Justin Hampson from Triple-A Portland and optioned right-handed pitcher Mike Thompson to that same Portland club.

Justin Hampson, 26, is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (1 ER/6.0 IP) in six relief appearances for Triple-A Portland this season. He has recorded four strikeouts and three walks while holding opposing batters to a .190 average (4-for-21) in his 6.0 innings with the Beavers.

Claimed by San Diego from Colorado on October 11, 2006, Hampson made his Major League debut with the Rockies last September and went 1-0 with a 7.50 ERA (10 ER/12.0 IP) in five appearances (one start) with Colorado. In 31 games (13 starts) for Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2006, Hampson went 8-4 with a 3.33 ERA (45 ER/121.2 IP). He recorded a team-best 95 strikeouts for the Sky Sox while issuing 39 walks. Selected by the Rockies in the 28th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Hampson is 52-56 with a 4.08 ERA (417 ER/920.0 IP) in 174 career minor league appearances (148 starts).

Mike Thompson, 26, is 0-1 with a 7.84 ERA (9 ER/10.1 IP) in five games for the Padres this season. He has struck out five batters while walking three over 10.1 relief innings.

Originally selected by San Diego in the fifth-round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Thompson has a career Major League record of 4-6 with 5.28 ERA (60 ER/102.1 IP), 40 strikeouts and 33 walks in 24 games (16 starts). Over parts of eight minor league seasons in the Padres organization (1999-2006), he has a career record of 55-48 with a 4.50 ERA (437 ER/873.2 IP) in 182 games (149 starts).
