Madden down, DeMark up to Lake Elsinore

The San Diego Padres sent right-handed closer John Madden down to extended spring training in Peoria, Arizona on Friday. They brought up Mike DeMark to take his place.

Right-hander John Madden was sent to extended because his velocity was down from last season and the Padres wanted to make sure there were no underlying problems that caused the sudden dip.

Madden was 0-2 with three saves and a 7.88 ERA for the Lake Elsinore Storm this season and has given up 15 hits in eight innings of work while striking out 10.

Right-hander Mike DeMark, who began the year in extended spring will take his place on the roster. It is unclear who will close in Madden's absence.

DeMark was having a good showing in extended after signing out of the independent leagues during the off-season.

In 2006, DeMark went 1-4 with a 3.22 ERA for the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League. In 64 innings he struck out 59 hitters and kept opposing batters to a .192 average.
