Branyan activated; Laforest outrighted

San Diego, CA-- The San Diego Padres today activated infielder Russell Branyan from the bereavement list and outrighted catcher Pete Laforest to Triple-A Portland.

Russell Branyan, 31, is hitting .292 (7-for-24) with three doubles, one home run and four RBI in 14 games for San Diego this season. He has a career average of .233 (402-for-1,729) with 243 runs, 86 doubles, six triples, 112 home runs and 278 RBI with Cleveland (1998-2002), Cincinnati (2002-03), Milwaukee (2004-2005), Tampa Bay (2006) and San Diego (2006-2007).

Pete Laforest, 29, is batting .313 (5-for-16) with one double and an RBI in six games for the Padres this season. His contract was purchased from Portland on April 12 when catcher Josh Bard was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a left groin strain. Laforest is 24-for-128 (.188) with seven runs, six doubles, one home run and 11 RBI in 50 Major League games with Tampa Bay (2003, 2005) and San Diego (2007).
