Padres Draft Interview: Tommy Toledo

Go on to pitch for the Florida Gators or sign with the San Diego Padres – that is the decision Tommy Toledo has to make. He made it into the clubhouse of Tropicana Field this past weekend to greet the Padres big league club in Tampa Bay but this is a decision that will take time.

Talk to us about being selected by the San Diego Padres and how you are feeling.

Tommy Toledo: It was amazing. I wasn't expecting it to be that high. It was pretty exciting. My whole family was there and it was a lot of fun.

Talk to me about your pitching repertoire. What do you like to throw?

Tommy Toledo: Pitching-wise I am fastball, curveball, changeup. I like to throw my changeup a lot. I like to mix it up, but I am like a lot of pitchers out there.

You have two strikes on a batter – what is the pitch you go to?

Tommy Toledo: I will try and sneak a fastball by them if it is in a weird count, like 0-2, I will try and get them thinking. My curveball too to see if I can get them chasing. The changeup will usually be there on the lefties.

What is it you look forward to now that you are on the cusp of professional baseball?

Tommy Toledo: I am just looking forward to playing pro ball. I am looking forward to moving to the next level. I am excited to see what happens with my future. I can't wait to get going.

What is another aspect of your game that you take a lot of pride in – aside from pitching.

Tommy Toledo: I have been around baseball for a long time and consider myself to be an athlete. I am pretty versatile and could play a lot of different positions. It is something I work hard out – just to be able to help my team in any way I can.

Talk about your game as a whole – what are you looking to improve upon as you continue to work up the ladder?

Tommy Toledo: Right now I have been working out and staying healthy, throwing some bullpen and long toss. I am pretty excited about what happens down the road.

I would like to gain some weight and put some more meat on me and see if I can throw a little harder and getting in the weight room to get stronger.
