Terrmel Sledge retuns; Bocachica designated

San Diego, CA- The San Diego Padres today returned Terrmel Sledge from a rehab assignment at Triple-A Portland and reinstated the outfielder from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding roster move, the club designated outfielder Hiram Bocachica for assignment.

Terrmel Sledge, 30, has been on the disabled list since July 7 (retroactive to June 28) due to a sprained right thumb. Over three games during the rehab assignment with Portland, he was 5-for-14 with one double, two RBI and two runs scored. Sledge suffered the injury diving for a ball on June 27 in San Francisco.

In 57 games for the Padres this season, Sledge is hitting .224 (32-for-143) with six doubles, six homers, 16 RBI and 17 runs scored. He has made 38 starts this season, including 37 in left field and one in right. Over parts of four Major League seasons with Montreal/Washington (2004-05) and San Diego (2006-07), Sledge has batted .253 (164-for-648) with 29 doubles, seven triples, 24 home runs, 93 RBI and 76 runs scored in 248 games.

Bocachica, 31, was 15-for-63 (.238) with four doubles, one homer, two RBI and nine runs scored in 27 games with the Padres. He was claimed off outright waivers from the Oakland Athletics on May 31. The right-handed hitting outfielder had played in six games with Oakland, going 1-for-17 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and two walks.

Hiram Bocachica's contract was purchased by Oakland from Triple-A Sacramento on May 16 after batting .318 (41-for-129) with 11 doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 32 RBI, 27 runs scored and eight stolen bases in 35 games for the River Cats. Bocachica was on the A's 40-man roster prior to Spring Training but was designated for assignment on February 14 and released on February 22. He signed a minor league contract with the A's on February 28.

In 272 career Major League games with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2000-2002), Detroit Tigers (2002-2003), Seattle Mariners (2004), Oakland A's (2005-2007) and Padres (2007), Bocachica has a career batting average of .215 (115-for-535) with 28 doubles, one triple, 15 home runs and 37 RBI.
