Padres move several within the system

The recent trades have affected the San Diego Padres minor league system in a big way, as a cascade of moves have been made. Two suspensions have also been issued and several injury updates will affect the clubs.

Outfielder Drew Macias was sent from Triple-A Portland to Double-A San Antonio, as Portland gained Terrmel Sledge and Hiram Bocachica in recent days and Paul McAnulty is expected to come off the disabled list over the next few days. Macias was hitting .282 with 11 RBIs over 32 games.

As a result, outfielder Josh Howard has been sent down from San Antonio to High-A Lake Elsinore. Howard posted a .247 with 13 runs scored for the Missions.

Outfielders Robert Perry and Mike Epping have swapped roster positions with Perry going down to Low-A Fort Wayne and Epping moving up to Lake Elsinore. Perry had a .259 average over 19 games with the Storm, scoring 14 runs. Epping hit .217 with 15 RBIs over 34 games with the Wizards.

Second baseman Keoni Ruth has been shipped out of Lake Elsinore to short-season Eugene. Ruth netted just 17 at bats over five games with the Storm.

Catcher Justin Hatcher has been re-signed after being released from the Portland roster a few weeks ago. Hatcher will report to Lake Elsinore and serve as the backup to Jose Lobaton. He went 4-for-27 during his brief stint with Portland.

Two players from the Lake Elsinore squad have been suspended for "conduct detrimental to the team." Left-hander Brooks Dunn and catcher Brandon Gottier have been suspended indefinitely by the Padres with no timetable given for their return.

Left-hander Nick Schmidt will have his arm looked at by San Diego doctors this week. He felt discomfort in his elbow and was flown into San Diego to undergo an MRI.

Catcher Mitch Canham should return to action by the end of this week after being sidelined with a groin injury.
