Brocail reinstated; Thompson optioned

San Diego, CA - The San Diego Padres today reinstated right-handed pitcher Doug Brocail from the bereavement list and optioned right-hander Mike Thompson to Triple-A Portland.

Doug Brocail, 40, was originally placed on the bereavement list August 10, missing three games. In 43 relief appearances for the Padres this season, he is 4-1 with a 3.96 ERA (23 ER/52.1 IP) with 28 strikeouts compared to 17 walks. Over parts of 13 Major League seasons, Brocail has a 43-43 record with seven saves and 4.08 ERA (349 ER/769.1 IP) in 510 games (42 starts) with San Diego (1992-1994, 2006-07), Houston (1995-96), Detroit (1997-2000) and Texas (2004-05).

Mike Thompson, 26, is 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA (12 ER/15.2 IP) in seven games for the Padres this season. He has struck out five batters while walking seven. Originally selected by San Diego in the fifth round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, Thompson has a career Major League record of 4-6 with a 5.27 ERA (63 ER/107.2 IP), 40 strikeouts and 37 walks in 26 games (16 starts).
