Cassel recalled; Laforest designated

San Diego, CA-- The San Diego Padres today recalled right-handed pitcher Jack Cassel from Triple-A Portland and designated catcher Pete Laforest for assignment.

The club also reinstated infielder Oscar Robles and left-hander Ryan Ketchner from the Portland disabled list, recalled both players from Portland and placed them on the 15-day disabled list. Robles is placed on the disabled list with a left wrist tendon sheath tear, while Ketchner goes on the DL due to left shoulder rotator cuff tendonitis.

Jack Cassel, 27, had his contract purchased from Portland on August 10 and made his Major League debut in the Padres 12-7, 11-inning win in Cincinnati that night. The right-hander tossed 3.0 innings in relief and yielded two runs on two hits and one walk while fanning one batter. He was optioned back to Portland on August 11. In 27 games (24 starts) with the Beavers this season, Cassel is 7-14 with a 3.91 ERA (68 ER/156.2 IP). He is 6-14 with a 4.13 ERA (68 ER/148.1 IP) in 24 starts with three complete games, and 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/8.1 IP) in three relief appearances. A native of Northridge, Calif., who attended Loyola Marymount University, he was originally drafted by the Padres in the 25th round of the 2000 First-Year Player Draft.

The 29-year-old Pete Laforest most recently had his contract purchased from Portland on August 11. In 10 games over two stints with San Diego this season, he is batting .360 (9-for-25) with a double, homer, three RBI and seven runs scored. Originally claimed off waivers by the Padres on December 2, 2005, Laforest has a .204 career batting average (28-for-137) with six doubles, two homers, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and 12 walks over 54 Major League games with Tampa Bay (2003, 2005) and San Diego (2007).

Robles, 31, has been on the Portland disabled list since June 22 (retroactive to June 21). He was recalled from Triple-A on April 23 and batted .238 (5-for-21) with two RBI in 16 games for San Diego before he was optioned back to Portland on June 1. In 28 games with the Beavers this season, Robles hit .284 (29-for-102) with five doubles, three triples, 11 RBI, nine runs scored and eight walks. Signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent on February 19, 2007, Robles has a career Major League average of .261 (109-for-418) with 18 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 36 RBI and 50 runs scored over 155 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2005-06) and Padres (2007).

Ketchner was placed on the Portland disabled list on July 27 (retroactive to July 25). The 25-year-old left-hander went 1-11 with a 5.62 ERA (62 ER/99.1 IP) in 19 starts for the Beavers this season with 85 strikeouts compared to 37 walks. Ketchner was signed by the Padres as a free agent on November 10, 2006.
