Padres promote Pete DeYoung

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have promoted Pete DeYoung to Assistant to Director of Scouting. Additionally, the club has named Anthony Byrd, Andrew Salvo and Rob Sidwell as amateur scouts.

DeYoung, 31, has spent three years in the Padres organization as an amateur scout for the Southeast region (2006-07) and as a baseball operations intern (2005). Prior to joining the Padres organization, he played five years (2000-04) in the Independent Northern League with the Adirondack Lumberjacks, New Jersey Jackals, Joliet Jackhammers and the Gary Southshore RailCats. An infielder, he was invited to minor league Spring Training with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2000 and the Atlanta Braves in 2001. DeYoung graduated from Brown University where he was a two-time First-Team All-Ivy League performer (1998-99).

Byrd will take over the Southeast region after spending the past three years (2005-2007) as assistant baseball coach for the Atlanta Astros, serving as the hitting and outfield coach for the college wood bat summer team. In 2005, he participated in the Atlanta Braves Scout School held at the Braves Spring Training Complex in Orlando, FL. Selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round of the 1992 June Draft, Byrd played six minor league seasons as an outfielder with the Twins (1992-96) and Montreal Expos (1997) organizations.

Salvo will serve as the club's Northwest region amateur scout. He joins the San Diego organization after spending 2007 as Head Instructor and Travel Team Director for the Pensacola Pelicans Training Academy where his duties included scouting and recruiting for high school showcase teams. A former minor league infielder, Salvo was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 22nd round of the 2001 Draft. He played three minor league seasons in the White Sox (2001-03) and New York Mets (2003) systems as well as three seasons of Independent ball with the Long Island Ducks (2004, Atlantic League), Chico Outlaws (2005, Golden League), Brockton Rox (2005 Can-Am League) and Pensacola Pelicans (2006, American Association).

Sidwell enters his 13th season as a professional scout and will cover Florida and Puerto Rico. He most recently served as the Florida Area Scouting Supervisor for the New York Mets (2005-2007). Sidwell worked in the same capacity with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1996-2005 after five years as the assistant head baseball coach at the University of Central Florida (1992-96).
