Padres sign third baseman Gary Schneidmiller

The San Diego Padres have purchased the contract of third baseman Gary Schneidmiller from the Amarillo Dillas. Schneidmiller will report to Spring Training in Peoria, AZ with a chance to make the Double-A San Antonio Missions.

Gary Schneidmiller, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound infielder was signed in 2006 by the Amarillo Dillas after spending the previous seven seasons in the minor leagues with Boston and Oakland.

Originally a sixth-round pick by the Athletics in 1998, Schneidmiller's two seasons in 2006 and 2007 with the Amarillo produced a .323 average with 56 RBIs in 2006 and a .332 average with 65 RBIs in 2007.

He carries a career .386 on-base percentage into Spring Training and walked more than he struck out in 2006.

Schneidmiller had 33 extra base hits this past season and with the departure of David Freese to St. Louis in a deal that netted Jim Edmonds there is little competition at the hot corner in Double-A.
