Wade LeBlanc threw one poor pitch – resulting in a solo homer – over five innings. The left-hander tossed 92 pitches, including 60 for strikes, while yielding two hits and a walk, hitting a batter and striking out eight to move to 5-4 on the year. The southpaw has given up one run over his last two starts and has won three straight starts. The homer allowed was his 10th bomb surrendered this season – five coming with the bases empty.
Chip Ambres hit one of the Beavers four homers – going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and his solo homer in the seventh. The outfielder has notched 11 multi-hit games over his last 30 contests, hitting .316 over that span. Eight of his 10 homers have come against right-handed pitching, and the right-handed hitter is swatting .325 off righties and just .179 off left-handed pitchers. He is in the top 10 in the Pacific Coast League in both runs scored and RBIs.
Nick Hundley swatted his ninth bomb of the year in the fifth inning – a two-run shot. He added a single through his other three at-bats and scored twice. The catcher has gone yard in five of his last eight games and has an RBI in six of those contests. He has also scored eight runs over his last eight games. Hundley was 0-for-1 throwing out base runners attempting to steal. The backstop has thrown out 14 of the 31 base runners attempting to steal this season.
San Antonio (26-28) vs Arkansas (Angels) postponed due to rain
The teams will play a doubleheader on Monday with two seven-inning games.
Lake Elsinore (28-29) won 10-5 over Inland Empire (Dodgers)
Javis Diaz contributed three hits in four at-bats from the leadoff spot, scoring twice and driving in three – two RBIs coming on his third homer of the season in the second inning and the final one on a sacrifice fly. The outfielder came into the game with three hits in his previous 25 at-bats. Diaz has six games with three or more hits on the year and is now hitting .372 with two homers when he does not play in the field.
Eric Sogard hit his first homer of the season – a three-run blast in the fourth. He also singled twice and ended the night with four RBIs. Sogard also stole his fourth base of the season. While Sogard has registered a hit in eight of his last nine games, the second baseman has seen his average drop from .358 to .324 over his last 13 contests due to a .216 average over that span, including Sunday. Sogard is batting .443 with runners in scoring position this season.
Ernesto Frieri moved to 3-4 after allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits over six innings. Eleven of his outs came via the fly ball and the right-hander did not record a strikeout. After posting a 8.25 ERA over his first three starts, Frieri has notched a 1.50 mark over his last two starts. Despite a .311 average allowed to the leadoff man of an inning, he is holding the opposition to a .221 average with runners on base.
Fort Wayne (29-27) won 4-0 over Great Lakes (Dodgers)
Allen Harrington was dominant over five innings, yielding two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high nine and inducing five ground ball outs – including a double play grounder. It was the first time he has walked two batters in an outing since his first appearance of the year. Harrington has recorded five double play grounders – all coming over his last six outings.
Robert Perry went 2-for-5 with an RBI while also committing his first error since joining Fort Wayne and third of the season. Perry came to Fort Wayne hitless in his final 22 at-bats with seven walks to show for his troubles. Since coming to the Midwest League, Perry is 6-for-13 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. He has a 23-to-18 walk-to-strikeout ratio across two leagues.
Robert Woodard contributed two scoreless innings to the shutout, giving up a double and striking out four. The right-hander improved his ERA as a reliever to 4.19 after posting a 3.80 ERA in five starts. Woodard has given up two runs over his last nine innings of work. He has posted a .148 average against with runners on base and two outs.
