Padres announce roster moves

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today recalled right-handed pitcher Cla Meredith from Triple-A Portland. The club also placed outfielder Scott Hairston on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ligament in his left thumb and, in a move reported first by, purchased the contracts of right-handed pitcher Josh Geer and outfielder Will Venable from Triple-A Portland.

Additionally, left-handed pitcher Wil Ledezma has been claimed off outright waivers by Arizona.

Cla Meredith, 25, was optioned to Portland on August 15. In six relief appearances with the Beavers, he has posted a 2.70 ERA (2 ER/6.2 IP) with four strikeouts and three walks. Meredith has gone 0-3 with a 3.99 ERA (25 ER/56.1 IP), 39 strikeouts and 22 walks in 60 relief appearances for San Diego this season. Acquired by the Padres from Boston on May 1, 2006, Meredith is 10-10 with a 3.29 ERA (69 ER/189.0 IP), 135 strikeouts and 49 walks in 188 career Major League relief appearances with Boston (2005) and San Diego (2006-08).

The 28-year-old Scott Hairston suffered the injury in the Padres win over Arizona on Wednesday (August 27), diving for a ball in center field. He has made 88 appearances (75 starts) in the outfield for San Diego, including 51 games in center field (45 starts) and 49 games in left field (30 starts). Hairston is hitting .248 (81-for-326) with 18 doubles, three triples, 17 home runs, 31 RBI, 42 runs scored and three stolen bases in 112 games for the Padres in 2008. He has established single-season, career-highs in games played, runs scored, home runs and walks and tied his single-season highs for doubles and stolen bases. Acquired by San Diego from Arizona on July 27, 2007, Hairston has a career Major League average of .246 (237-for-963) with 54 doubles, 11 triples, 41 home runs, 98 RBI and 120 runs scored in 344 games over parts of five seasons with the Diamondbacks (2004-07) and Padres (2007-08).

Josh Geer, 25, is 8-9 with a 4.54 ERA (84 ER/166.2 IP), 107 strikeouts and 45 walks in 28 appearances (27 starts) with Portland this season. The right-hander's 166.2 innings pitched are the most in the Pacific Coast League while his 27 starts lead the Beavers and are tied for the most starts in one season by a Portland pitcher since the team returned to the PCL in 2001. Selected by the Padres in the third round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Geer is 42-23 with a 3.94 ERA (248 ER/567.0 IP), 353 strikeouts and 115 walks in 94 career minor league games (91 starts). In 2007, he was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Year after leading the league with 16 wins and a 3.20 ERA.

Will Venable, 25, is hitting .292 (129-for-442) with 26 doubles, four triples, 14 home runs, 58 RBI, 70 runs scored, 44 walks and seven stolen bases in 120 games with Triple-A Portland this season. He has played 100 games in center field, committing four errors in 209 total chances and posting a .981 fielding percentage. Selected by the Padres in the seventh round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Venable has hit .288 (469-for-1627) with 88 doubles, 16 triples, 36 home runs, 243 RBI, 252 runs scored and 52 stolen bases in 435 career minor league games.

Wil Ledezma, 27, is 0-2 with a 4.47 ERA (27 ER/54.1 IP), 49 strikeouts and 38 walks in 25 games (six starts) for San Diego this season. He has also made 11 relief appearances with Portland, going 1-0 with one save and a 4.41 ERA (8 ER/16.1 IP). Acquired by San Diego from Atlanta on July 31, 2007, Ledezma has a career 15-22 record with a 5.16 ERA (207 ER/361.0 IP), 243 strikeouts and 176 walks in 152 Major League appearances (40 starts) over parts of six seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2003-07), Braves (2007) and Padres (2007-08).
