He led National League first basemen in games played and innings played, while also ranking among league leaders at the position in putouts (4th, 1,306), assists (4th, 130), double plays (2nd, 129) and fielding percentage (2nd). Gonzalez ranked third among all Major Leaguers in innings played.
Gonzalez' defensive performance complemented a career-year at the plate in which he hit .279 (172-for-616) with 32 doubles, one triple, 36 home runs, 119 RBI and 103 runs scored. He set career-highs in home runs, RBI, runs scored and slugging percentage (.510).
