San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres today tendered contracts to 33 players for the 2009 season. Additionally, the club non-tendered right-handed pitchers Clay Hensley and Charlie Haeger.
, 29, appeared in 32 games (one start) for the Padres in 2008, going 1-2 with a 5.31 ERA (23 ER/39.0 IP), 26 strikeouts and 25 walks. The right-hander opened the season on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain and was reinstated on June 6. He also made 16 appearances (10 starts) for Triple-A Portland, going 1-1 with a 3.94 ERA (21 ER/48.0 IP) and tossed 1.0 scoreless inning of relief at Single-A Lake Elsinore. Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Padres (2005-08), Hensley is 15-18 with a 4.09 ERA (147 ER/323.2 IP) and 206 strikeouts in 106 games (40 starts).
Charlie Haeger, 25, was claimed off waivers by the Padres from the Chicago White Sox on September 10. The knuckleballer made four relief appearances with the Padres, posting a 16.62 ERA (8 ER/4.1 IP). He had spent the rest of the season at Triple-A Charlotte, going 10-13 with a 4.45 ERA (88 ER/178.0 IP) in 28 games (25 starts). Over parts of three Major League seasons with the White Sox (2006-07) and Padres (2008), Haeger is 1-2 with a 6.35 ERA (24 ER/34.0 IP) in 19 games (one start).
Non-tendered players are now free agents and may negotiate with any of the 30 Major League teams. The Padres now have 37 players on their 40-man roster.
