Padres acquire Mujica from Indians

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Padres announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Edward Mujica (pronounced MOO-he-kuh) from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Edward Mujica, 24, split the 2008 season between Cleveland and Triple-A Buffalo. With the Indians, he was 3-2 with a 6.75 ERA (29 ER/38.2 IP) and 27 strikeouts in 33 appearances. He was 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA (12 ER/26.0 IP) and 27 strikeouts in 18 games at Buffalo.

The Venezuela native has spent his entire Major League career with Cleveland (2006-2008), posting a 3-3 record and 6.04 ERA (47 ER/70.0 IP) with 46 strikeouts in 53 relief outings. He was signed by the Indians as a non-drafted free agent on October 22, 2001.
