Padres Prospect Interview: Chris Britton

Once thought to end up in the San Diego Padres bullpen, Chris Britton is down in Double-A working on making it back to the show. He isn't bitter but times have been tough.

How did you asses your spring?

Christopher Britton: Pitchers will stumble here and there, but we were there to pick each other up, and I think we did a pretty good job of it.

You had a successful stint in the majors with Baltimore but it seemed you haven't been given a fair chance since. Is that a fair assessment?

Christopher Britton: No, there are a lot of guys ahead of me and a lot of guys with different situations than me. I wouldn't say I wasn't given a fair chance; it just wasn't my time.

You have been very good against right-handed hitters over the life of your career. What enables you to have so much success against them?

Christopher Britton: Just basically having strike one – throwing that 90 percent of the time. I try to throw it all the time, but of course it doesn't always work out that way. As long as you throw strikes, you're going to have success.

What do you need to do to see the same type of success against left-handed hitters?

Christopher Britton: [With lefties] it's a little bit different approach when it comes to sliders and two-seamers, going in and away. Really, I think I just have to study them more and try to figure out my own way of attacking them and having good success against them.

Through your career, you have been very successful with runners on base. Does your mentality change when there are someone else's runners on the base paths?

Christopher Britton: No, not really. With runners on base really you've got to rely on your defense and try to get a ground ball and hopefully get two outs instead of one.

People have mentioned that your conditioning could be an issue. Is that something you have to keep on top of continually to be the best pitcher you can be?

Christopher Britton: I think all of us pitchers have to stay on top of our conditioning – maybe me a little more than others because I'm a little bigger than most of these guys. But I mean, all of us work our [butts] off on conditioning and everything.
