Padres Draft Interview: James Needy

Selected in the sixth-round out of Santee High School in East County by the San Diego Padrs, James Needy is filled with projection. First, he has to make a choice. MadFriars.com spoke with Needy about that choice, his maturity, and his repertoire, among other topics.

James Needy is staying in the San Diego family. The Santee product has a full ride to the University of San Diego – or sign with the San Diego Padres. It is a win-win in his eyes.

A mature 18-year-old, Needy went 9-4 with a 1.14 ERA across 79 innings this past season, striking out 87.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander is mature beyond his years, possessing a fastball in the low-90s that has even more projection to go along with a quality curveball and developing changeup.

What hasn't been talked about is the cutter he also throws – which lands in the 84 mph range and offers a different look.
