Padres add to scouting staff

The San Diego Padres today announced additions and changes to their 2010 amateur scouting staff.

Pete DeYoung will continue his duties as Assistant Director of Scouting while also supervising the West Coast area scouts. He was named to his current post in January of 2008 after having served in the Padres organization as an area scout from 2006-07. DeYoung first joined the Padres as a baseball operations intern during the 2005 campaign. A Native of Chicago, he graduated from Brown University and played five years as an infielder in the Independent Northern League from 2000-04.

Tim Holt has been promoted to Central Regional Supervisor after having covered Texas as an area scout for the past four years. He first joined the Padres as Midwest Crosschecker for the 2004-05 seasons. Prior to his time with San Diego, Holt served as a scout for the Oakland Athletics for 10 years after attending Texas A&M from 1987-92.

Ash Lawson has been promoted to Northeast Regional Supervisor after having covered Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina as an area scout since 2005. Lawson previously coached at the collegiate level, serving as head coach at Tennessee Wesleyan for four years, as interim head coach at Bluefield College, and as a volunteer assistant at Elon University. Lawson graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan after playing both baseball and basketball.

Justin Baughman has been added as an area scout, responsible for the Pacific Northwest. He spent the previous three seasons as head coach of the Lewis & Clark University baseball team in Portland, Ore. A former ballplayer in the Angels and White Sox systems, Baughman made Big League appearances for the Angels in the 1998 and 2000 seasons.

Jeff Curtis has been hired as an area scout for Northern Texas and Northern Louisiana after serving as a part-time scout for the Cubs. Prior to his scouting work with Chicago, he was the head coach for the University of Texas, Arlington baseball team. There he coached several Major League players including Hunter Pence, Daniel Ortmeier and Pete LaForest.

Josh Emmerick has been hired as the area scout for Southern California, covering Los Angeles and the Central Valley. A former catcher at Rancho Buena Vista High School in San Diego, he was drafted in the 17th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft by Washington and continued his minor league career until 2006.

Kevin Ellis has been added as an area scout for Southern Texas and Southern Louisiana after spending two years as an area scout for the Milwaukee Brewers. Prior to his work with the Brewers, Ellis served as an assistant coach for several Division I college programs and junior colleges. He has a B.A. in communications and was captain of the Baylor University baseball team in 1992 before playing professionally in the Cubs organization from 1993-99.

Shane Monahan will take over as an area scout for Georgia and Northern Florida after spending the past year working as Scouting Coordinator for the Premier Sports Agency. From 1995-2003, Monahan played in the Seattle, Cincinnati, San Diego, Kansas City, Colorado, Pittsburgh and New York (AL) organizations, making Big League appearances with the Mariners in 1998 and 1999. He was the Mariners' second-round selection out of Clemson University in the 1995 First-Year Player Draft.

Mark Connor has been hired as area scout for Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Eastern Indiana after having coached at the University of South Carolina, Aiken, Indian Hills Community College and Cumberland University. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Conner was a pitcher, catcher and first baseman at Cumberland University and the University of Toledo.

Ilana Miller has been promoted to Coordinator, Scouting and Player Development after having served as Administrative Assistant since 2006. In her new role, she will coordinate the administrative operations for Amateur Scouting and Player Development departments.
