Padres Minor League Notebook: 7-7-10

Lance Zawadzki continues to hit well in Portland. Jeremy McBryde is back starting in Lake Elsinore. Pedro Hernandez has a solid outing go for naught. Yair Lopez has been an RBI machine for the AZL Padres.

Portland (33-53) won 6-3 over Las Vegas (Blue Jays)

Lance Zawadzki went 2-for-3 with a double, his ninth, an RBI and two runs scored. The shortstop also added his fifth stolen base of the season in nine attempts. Zawadzki is hitting .308 across his last 26 games with eight doubles, 16 runs scored and nine RBI. He has upped his average from .162 to .242 across that process.

Adam Russell collected his eighth hold of the year, retiring the side in order in the eighth. It is his fourth straight scoreless appearance after giving up runs in six of his previous nine outings. Russell has allowed runs in 11 of 28 overall. The leadoff hitter of the inning is holding a .400 on-base percentage off the righty and hitting .289 with runners in scoring position.

San Antonio (5-6, 40-41) had a scheduled day off

Lake Elsinore (6-8, 52-32) lost 2-1 to Inland Empire (Dodgers)

Jeremy McBryde got the start and went three innings, working scoreless ball. He yielded three hits and a walk while fanning three. McBryde has allowed two runs on eight hits across nine innings between Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore. He has held right-handed hitters to four hits in 21 at-bats between the two circuits.

Rob Musgrave lowered his season ERA with the Storm to 2.09 by posting zeroes across a pair of frames. He allowed two hits and a walk while fanning one and netting three ground ball outs. Musgrave also picked off a runner at first base and induced his fourth double play of the year. Musgrave has posted a 1.79 ERA across his last 40.1 innings, spanning 27 appearances. He has struck out 10.3 batters per nine innings.

Fort Wayne (6-7, 42-41) lost 3-1 to Lake County (Indians)

Pedro Hernandez allowed one run on four hits across six innings in a no-decision, striking out four and not walking a batter. The southpaw has posted a 3.93 ERA across his four starts after notching a 4.63 ERA in 14 relief appearances. Hernandez has limited the opposition to a .248 average with the bases empty. That number rises to .311 with runners on base.

Griffin Benedict was the lone hitter to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3. He also added his second stolen base. Benedict did, however, go 0-for-4 in throwing out base runners attempting to steal. Benedict came into the game hitting .111 in his previous 14 games with five hits in 45 at-bats. The backstop has thrown out 9-of-45 runners attempting thievery this year, good for 20-percent.

Eugene (8-11) had a scheduled day off

AZL Padres (6-8) won 9-7 over AZL Angels

Yair Lopez banged out three hits in five trips, hitting an inside-the-park homer during a in the seventh to tie the game then at 6-6. He added an RBI single in the fifth and a run-scoring single in the eighth to push across eventual winning run. Lopez also scored twice. The outfielder has a hit in 10 of his 11 contests with an RBI in nine of the 11. Lopez is 8-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

Paul Bingham went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI out of the five-hole. The third baseman also added his fourth stolen base but did commit his third error. Bingham has five multi-hit games in 12 contests. Sixteen of his 17 hits have been singles but he has a .386 average with a .451 on-base percentage. He is also 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position.

Tyler Norwood picked up his first save of the season, walking one while striking out two in the ninth inning to close out the game. The right-hander has allowed runs in one of his four outings. Left-handed hitters are 3-for-6 off him while he has held right-handed hitters to a .125 average against. He has allowed 11 base runners in 6.1 innings but sports a 2.84 ERA.
