Missions double up Rough Riders

San Antonio, Texas: The Missions faced the Frisco Rough Riders in a critical series. The Missions have won the last six of eight matchups against the Rough Riders. Left-hander Nathan Culp started the game for the Missions and faced the Riders top pitching prospect, left-hander Martin Perez.

The Missions took the lead early when James Darnell drove in a run with a hard hit line drive to shallow left field. Then Luis Martinez stretched the field and ripped a ground ball into right, which scored Matt Clark and put the Missions up by two runs.

The Rough Riders answered back in the third, Marcus Lemon found the gap in right-center, which drove in a run. Then, Lemon stole two bases and was able to score an unearned run on a botched throw to first by the catcher Luis Martinez after he dropped the ball on a strikeout.

The Missions continued to make good contact with the ball and get men on base. After he gave up two hits, Martin Perez was taken out after only two and a half innings and replaced by right hander Brennan Garr. The Missions designated hitter, Anthony Contreras, hit a long line drive into left field which cleared the bases and put the Mission up by two. Andy Parrino chopped a curveball into center field and scored another run for the Missions. Then Blake Tekotte hit a high fly ball to right center field which was lost in the sun and dropped by the right fielder to extend the Missions lead to 6-2. The inning ended with Lance Zawadzki who struck out, but in frustration threw his bat on the ground and was immediately thrown out by home plate umpire Alex Ortiz. Zawadzki was angry and got in the face of Ortiz, but the decision stood and the Missions were forced to make some defensive changes in the fourth.

"It's a competitive game and sometimes you lose your head," said Missions manager Doug Dascenzo. "We kept our head in the game and really played some good baseball tonight. All of our pitchers came in and did a great job, Culp had 10 strikeouts in five innings and you really can't argue with that."

Later in the seventh, Blake Tekotte pushed a ground ball just out of the reach of the second baseman and drove in another run for the Missions which made the score 7-2.

The Rough Riders attempted to chip away at the lead in the top of the eighth when Jose Felix hit a low fly ball into right field which drove a run in, but the Missions defense held strong and ended the inning after the next batter.

Anthony Contreras continued to have a very productive night as he drove in a run when he ripped a fastball straight into right field which put the Missions up by five. Right hander Aaron Breit went in to close the game out for the Missions. After a quick two strikeouts, Breit got himself into trouble when he loaded the bases then walked a run in. Scribner relieved Breit and finished out the game with a final score of 8-4.
