Both players have come up through the Phillies system after being drafted by the club. Mathieson was drafted in the 17th round of the 2002 Draft and Brown was taken in the 20th round of the 2006 Draft.
Brown, 23, came into the season ranked as the top prospect in the Phillies organization and hit a combined 20-68-.327 between Reading and Lehigh Valley this season before being promoted to the Phillies on July 28. In 30 games with the Phillies, Brown is hitting .214 with two home runs and 12 RBI.
The 26 year-old Mathieson made his major league debut in June of 2006, but has since undergone two Tommy John surgeries and another surgery to clean scar tissue from his right elbow. The Phillies had recalled him earlier in the season, but he pitched just 2/3 of an inning for the Phillies in June before being sent back to Lehigh Valley. He was re-added to the roster on September 5.
Mathieson and Brown will receive their awards - known as the Paul Owens Award - prior to the Phillies game against Washington on September 19.
