Moyer left his most recent start in the third inning, after complaining of pain in his elbow. Former major leaguer Moises Alou is the Escogido general manager, and said that he believes Moyer re-injured the elbow and that it will likely end his pitching career.
Moyer didn't comment on the injury, but is expected to return to the United States where he will be examined to determine the extent of the injury. Depending on the outcome of that exam, Moyer would then have to decide whether to continue to attempt getting a contract for next season or announce his retirement.
The injury occurred in Moyer's third start of the Dominican Winter League season. He had allowed just one hit and struck out three hitters in his 2 1/3 innings of work, when he went down with the injury. Overall, Moyer pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, no walks and striking out five while posting a 1.69 ERA with Escogido.
In his career with the Phillies, Moyer was 56-40 with a 4.55 ERA over five seasons. His best season with the Phillies came in 2008 when he went 16-7, 3.71 ERA to lead the team in wins. He also compiled 196 1/3 innings in 2008 and has pitched over 4,000 innings in his career.
