Sandberg Takes Over at Lehigh Valley

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs will be welcoming a Hall of Famer to their manager's office for the 2011 season. Ryne Sandberg comes back to the Phillies organization after being passed over to manage the Cubs.

The Phillies got their man.

In a move that had been rumored for some time, the Phillies have hired Ryne Sandberg to replace Dave Huppert as manager at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Sandberg managed at Triple-A Iowa in the Cubs organization last season, leading them to an 82-62 record and picking up the Pacific Coast League Manager of the Year honor. After being passed over for the Cubs managerial job, Sandberg decided to leave the organization and look elsewhere for new opportunities. His search led him to the Phillies, the organization that he initially reached the majors with before being added as a throw-in to acquire Ivan DeJesus from the Cubs.

The Phillies will name the rest of Sandberg's staff and a new manager and staff for Double-A Reading in the near future.
