Benson Shuts Down Phillies Offense

Kris Benson has suffered through injury problems, but if he continues to pitch against the Phillies, his problems are all behind him. Benson improved to 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in five starts against the Phillies as the Pirates shut down the Phils offense for a 2-0 win. On the bright side, the Phillies got a strong performance from Brett Myers in a losing effort.

Myers struck out a career high eleven hitters and allowed just four hits over six innings in taking the loss for the Phillies. The Phillies bullpen threw three innings and allowed just one earned run.

After collecting nineteen hits Saturday, the Phillies offense collected eight off Benson and three other Pittsburgh pitchers. While Benson (2-0) got the win, former Phillie Mike Williams pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his third save of the season.

Placido Polanco went 3-for-5 and Mike Lieberthal continued his hot hitting with two hits on the afternoon. Brian Giles and Pokey Reese drove in runs for the Pirates while Kenny Lofton and Jason Kendall both collected two hits for Pittsburgh.

The Phillies have an off day Monday before starting a home series against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night at The Vet.
