Phillies Present Wall of Fame Nominees

The Phillies have presented a list of 12 nominees for their annual Wall of Fame inductions. The list has some contemporary names along with names from the more distant past.

Curt Schilling would seem to be the front-runner on this year's list of 12 candidates for the Phillies Wall of Fame. The right-hander was on the ballot last year, but didn't make it to the Wall, with John Kruk being given the honor over Schilling.

The list has contemporary players like Schilling, Mike Lieberthal, Greg Gross and Von Hayes and also goes back further to include players like Jim Konstanty, Rick Wise and Pinky Whitney. Former manager Jim Fregosi and former coach Mike Ryan are also on this year's ballot.

The complete list of nominees reads like this: Pitchers Larry Christenson, Ron Reed, Konstanty, Wise and Schilling. Catchers Lieberthal and Jimmy Wilson. Third baseman Whitney. Outfielders Gross and Von Hayes and wraps up with Ryan and Fregosi.

One player not on this year's ballot is Lenny Dykstra. The former center fielder was on last year's ballot, but has been dropped likely because of his legal issues which have overtaken his career with the Phillies.

Fans can vote for their top three choices at until March 14 and the top five vote-getters will then be on the official ballot. Ultimately, the decision wrests with a selection committee made up of team executives and media members.

In announcing the list, the Phillies stressed that consideration for the list includes longevity, ability, contributions to the Phillies and baseball, character and special achievements. Officially, a player must have played for the Phillies for five or more years and amassed either 700 games as a position player or 180 innings as a pitcher to qualify. They must also be retired for three or more years.
