If you followed our coverage of the Tigers Fall Instructional League, you have likely heard some glowing reports on Navarro. The now 18-year old switch-hitter from Venezuela put on a show in his debut season in the Venezuelan Summer League. In 62 games for the club, the then 17-year old Navarro hit an impressive .315/.360/.452, finishing 11th in the league in batting average and 13th in the league in slugging. Thought whiffed 51 times in 261 plate appearances, Navarro's 19 doubles led the league and his 33 runs batted in placed him 10th among in the circuit. Navarro is a fast-rising prospect that fans should pay attention to as he prepares to make his Stateside debut in 2013.
VSL Tigers Pitcher of the Year
RHP Anthony Castro
|Team||W-L||G / GS||IP||ERA||K / BB||AVG|
|VSL Tigers||1-2||13 / 13||53.1||3.38||46 / 30||.212|
Castro is a guy the Tigers' brass were excited about heading into the year. The youngster won't turn 18 until next April, making him an extremely young participant in this year's VSL slate. Starting a whopping 13 games for the Tigers at such a young age, Castro logged 53 1/3 innings. He allowed only 40 hits but did walk 30 batters as he is still working on finding a consistent release point and commanding his fastball. His 46 strikeouts led to a solid 7.8 whiffs per nine rate. His ability to punch out hitters allowed him to keep his ERA at a strong 3.38 despite the high walk totals. There's a lot of projection tied to Castro as he already works in the low-90s and some scouts believe he could have premium velocity as he matures.
