David Lough has spent part of each of the past four seasons in the majors and he's hoping to make it five straight after signing a minor league deal with the Phillies on Monday. Lough, who turned 30 last week, has played with Baltimore the past two seasons and was with Kansas City for two seasons prior to that, hitting a combined 13-63-.255/.295/.377 in 312 major league games over that span.
While Lough, who bats left-handed, has had some success in the majors, this past season was a struggle that saw him hit just .201 this past season in 84 games with the Orioles. In 2013, Lough played in 96 games with Kansas City, hitting .286 with five home runs and 33 RBI. Defensively, Lough is strongest at the corner outfield spots, posting a +20 Defensive Runs Scored and +13.5 Ultimate Zone Rating in left field, and similar numbers in right field. Lough is also able to play in center field with decent numbers there.
Lough, who finished eighth in Rookie of the Year balloting in 2013, joins a crowded group of players who will fight for spots on the major league roster, with other likely having to fight for a spot on the Triple-A roster because of the number of outfield candidates the Phillies will have for the top two levels.
