Reading Fightin Phils catcher Jorge Alfaro has been selected as Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of April 7th-17th. The 22-year old catcher from Columbia hit an even .500 (18-for-36) with four doubles, one triple, one home run, 10 RBI, seven runs scored and a .750 slugging percentage in eight games for the Fightin Phils. Alfaro had at least one hit in all eight of the games he played in and had multiple hits in seven of those games, including going 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored in Reading’s 14-2 win at Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon.
Philly Baseball Insider ranked Alfaro as the eighth overall prospect in the Phillies organization, and the top catching prospect, coming into the season. MLB.com ranks Alfaro as the third best catching prospect in Minor League Baseball. The Phillies acquired Alfaro as part of the Cole Hamels trade with the Rangers last July. Texas had signed him as an international free agent in January, 2010.
Alfaro's hot start has him leading the league in batting average (.500) and hits (18). He is also ranked among the league leaders in on-base percentage (.526-2nd), OPS (1.276-2nd), doubles (4-tied 2nd), total bases (27-3rd), triples (1-tied 3rd), RBIs (10-tied 4th), extra-base hits (6-tied 4th), and runs scored (7-tied 7th).
