Right-hander Jose Taveras of the Lakewood BlueClaws was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week

Jose Taveras put together an impressive outing in a BlueClaws win last week and it was good enough to make him the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week. Taveras is the first member of the BlueClaws to pick up an award this season.

BlueClaws pitcher Jose Taveras was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 15th. Taveras pitched on May 9th at Kannpolis and threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and retiring 21 of the 23 batters he faced in the BlueClaws win over the Intimidators.

In eight games this season - the last three of them starts - Taveras has a 3.03 ERA with 32 2/3 innings pitched with 38 strikeouts and just fie walks on the season. To start the season, Taveras was in the Lakewood bullpen, but after five outings, in which he gave up three earned runs in 15 2/3 innings, he moved into the starting rotation on May 2nd. Taveras ERA as a reliever was 1.72 and he struck out 23 batters in 15 2/3 innings of work. As a starter, he is now 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA and has 15 strikeouts in 17 innings.

The Phillies signed Taveras as an amateur free agent in November of 2013. Last season, he pitched at Williamsport, making 13 starts and posting a 3.88 ERA with a 7-4 record. The 2015 season was Taveras' first in the states, after he pitched for the Phillies in the Dominican Summer League in 2014, where he was 8-4 with a 1.05 ERA in 15 games, 13 of them starts.
