The Phillies have started to dabble into the group of prospects coming out of Cuba. In March, they signed outfielder Osmel Aguila from the island nation, but it has taken two months for all of the immigration paperwork to be completed, which will allow Aguila to come to the United States. Aguila, 27, six seasons in the Cuban National Series, hitting a combined .280 with 33 home runs in 324 games.
Aguila signed for a reported $100,000 and will report to extended spring training in Clearwater. The Phillies believe that with his past experience in Cuba, he will be able to start his professional career at Triple-A Lehigh Valley when his sting in extended camp is over. The timetable for him to start playing in games or move up the minor league ladder is uncertain, but the Phillies ultimately hope that he could be in the majors by the end of the season, to see at least limited playing time.
Aguila has played primarily in left field for the Ganaderos de Camaquey of the Cuban National Series. In addition to his 111 games in left, he has played 42 games in center and one game at first base in his career.
