Phillies pitching prospect Matt Imhof suffered a serious eye injury during a post-game training mishap this week

Matt Imhof has moved steadily up the Phillies minor league ladder after being a second round pick in 2014 out of Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo. the 22-year old is now shut down and worrying about more than baseball after a freak training accident sent him in for eye surgery.

Matt Imhof went from Lakewood to Clearwater in mid-season last year and opened this season with the Threshers. Imhof was in the process of making the move from the starting rotation to the bullpen for the Threshers, but none of that matters after a freak accident changed Imhof's course on Sunday.

Media reports say that the 22-year old was working with a resistance band following Clearwater's game when the bracket connected to the wall suddenly gave-way and hit Imhof squarely in the right eye.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com termed the injury "career threatening," while Imhof's agent Adam Karon called it "a significant injury to his right eye."

As of Monday, Imhof had already undergone one surgery on the eye and it's likely that he'll have to undergo further procedures. Karon asked for privacy for Imhof and his family as he recovers from the incident.

The incident occurred at Brevard County Stadium, home to the High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. The stadium is owned by Brevard County.
