Dave Schofield - Lakewood BlueClaws

The Lakewood BlueClaws are hot right now, having won five straight games to increase their division lead.

The Lakewood BlueClaws got another impressive outing from Jose Taveras Wednesday night and beat Delmarva 5-0. Lakewood also got some help in their quest for a division title.

Jose Taveras threw seven scoreless innings and the BlueClaws finished a three-game sweep of Delmarva with a 5-0 win over Delmarva on Wednesday night at Perdue Stadium.

The win gives Lakewood (26-19/55-59) their fifth straight win and their third series sweep of the season, while Delmarva has dropped five straight games. It was Lakewood's eighth shutout of the season, first since July 18 at Charleston.

With Hagerstown's loss to Kannapolis, the BlueClaws now have a 1.5 game lead in the South Atlantic League Northern Division Second-Half Standings.

Taveras, who improved to 5-8 on the year, finished seven innings for the sixth time this season, allowing no runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. He moved into second place in the league with 124 strikeouts on the season and has 57 strikeouts against five walks in the second half.

Lakewood took the lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Damek Tomscha, driving home Mark Laird, who led off the game with a base-hit to centerfield.

Then in the fourth, the BlueClaws would extend the lead. A fielder's choice groundout from Deivi Grullon scored Tomscha, who led off the inning with a single. The throw home got by catcher Stuart Levy and let Grullon go to second. He would score on a single to centerfield by Edgar Cabral to give the BlueClaws a 3-0 lead.

Cabral added another RBI single for a 4-0 lead in the sixth. Cabral had been 4-for-36 entering the night, but added two hits and two RBI in the win.

Lakewood got their last run in the top of the ninth inning when Jose Pujols crushed his 21st home run of the year over the left field fence. Pujols has pulled to within one home run of the single-season BlueClaws franchise record of 22 set by Jim Murphy in 2011 and Juan Richardson in 2001.
