To say your bullpen is tired at this time of the season isn't much of a statement. Every bullpen is tired. The Lehigh Valley IronPigs bullpen is no different, but they got a much needed rest Sunday when Phil Klein (2-1) gave the team eight shutout innings in a 1-0 win over Indianapolis. Early on, the focus was on Indians starter Steveh Brault (2-6), who had a perfect game for 4 2/3 innings, but the focus quickly shifted to Klein, who would finish with a career-high 11 strikeouts. His previous best of 10, came in his last start for Lehigh Valley in a start at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 9.
Klein finished the day allowing just two hits and two walks, with 71 of his 104 pitches being for strikes. Hoby Milner pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out one more batter, to record his first Triple-A save.
Lehigh Valley's only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Emmanuel Burriss delivered a two-out base-hit to right. Cody Asche followed with a base-hit to right and Cam Perkins drove home Burriss with a hard hit single to left for the only run of the game. Lehigh Valley collected just one other hit in the rest of the game.
Scranton and Rochester split their Sunday double-header, leaving the IronPigs four games behind Scranton in the division and 5 1/2 games ahead of Rochester in the wild card race.
